The UAA Bookstore is hiring a pool of student associates for Spring 2018. We are looking for cashiers, textbook aides, and baristas. Associates will work directly with students, staff, faculty, and visitors of the University of Alaska Anchorage Campus.
The UAA Bookstore hours are 7:30am-7pm Monday-Thursday, 7:30am-6pm Friday, and 12pm-5pm Saturday during the fall and spring semesters.
We are looking for outgoing, upbeat, self starting, organized candidates who want to work in a positive and supportive work environment.
Six-months cash handling and customer service experience is preferred, as is a basic knowledge of a retail Point-Of-Sale (cash registering system), but not required. Ability to perform various cashier, customer service, and inventory duties in the operation of the Bookstore. Ability to operate a computer point-of-sale cash register to perform cashiering duties; count money, make correct change, and issue receipts; prepare and balance cash register as assigned. Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including a copier/scanner/fax machine, computer and assigned software; input a variety of Bookstore data into assigned computer system.
Training will be provided; associates are expected to obtain and maintain a food handler's card.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to take direction from Manager/Supervisor. Candidates must be comfortable working directly with students, staff, faculty, and visitors in a professional manner; engage in conversation; assist with finding items in the store. Must be able to handle multiple tasks at once; work successfully while under pressure. Able to work various shifts; Monday-Saturday, times ranging from 7:15am to 7pm.
To be eligible for student employment an applicant must:
a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment.
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters.
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the Dean of Students.
d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible with the approval of Dean of Students.
e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.
CANDIDATES MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR TRAINING.
Some prior retail experience preferred, but not required.
Barista experience preferred, but not required.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with the public.
High School Graduate, or equivalent.
Customer service, cash handling, and use of point-of-sale register experience preferred.
Food Handler's card
Physical Requirements (with or without a reasonable accommodation):
Ability to stand for at least a 4-hour shift
Ability to lift up to 50-pounds.
Hourly Pay: $9.50
NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require
the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.
