Position Summary:Willingness to learn and perform landscape maintenance and installation, including maintenance and installation of trees, shrubs, annual and perennial flower beds, mowing lawns and using other power equipment. Must possess good communications skills; the ability to understand and follow directions and provide feedback to supervisor. Ability to perform strenuous labor over long periods of time. Must be available to work regular 8 hour shift between the department hours (7:00am to 7:00pm, Monday through Friday) and/or earlier morning starts or weekend shifts if necessary. Must be dependable, cooperative and able to work independently as well as with co-workers of varying backgrounds. Valid driver’s license and current DMV driving record meeting EHS safe driver criteria will be required for consideration (to be verified by UAA).

Assist grounds department staff with landscape maintenance, ie, mowing & trimming, liming, aerating, dethatching, raking, sod repair, top-dressing, pruning, planting, transplanting, fertilizing, irrigation of trees and shrubs, weed control, planting and care of annual and perennial flowers and other duties necessary to keep a clean, safe and attractive campus. Operate university vehicles, small-motorized equipment and hand tools as directed. Other responsibilities include sweeping, trash pickup, empty trash cans, watering plant material and other landscaping maintenance duties as assigned. Required to work outside in all types of weather. Must provide own protective clothing; i.e., rain gear, appropriate footwear and gloves. Accountable for security of assigned tools.Essential

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to use many types of hand and power tools such as rakes, shovels, picks, and manual irrigation sprinklers. Ability to operate vehicles and equipment such as pick-up trucks. May assist landscaping staff with interior plant maintenance including but not limited to; cleaning and transplanting of interior foliage plants. May assist grounds department staff with snow removal and ice control duties including but not limited to; shoveling, spreading of ice-melting compounds, ice-chipping, hauling or pushing of snow using equipment. Assist grounds department staff with general duties including but not limited to; painting, litter removal, equipment cleaning, other janitorial duties and minor maintenance of tools and equipment.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to students, staff, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform operations using units of American money, weight measurement, area, volume, and distance calculations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: A valid AK Driver’s License is required for the position.
