This is an executive position (no union affiliation) and serves at the pleasure of the Mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage.
HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
LOCATION: 4700 Elmore Road, Anchorage, AK
Example of Duties:
Develop the vision for the department; providing direction to oversee major long range transportation projects, comprehensive land use planning and environmental resources, by administering and enforcing Zoning and Platting regulations to ensure efficient department operation. Direct the preparation of the department's annual budget in accordance with Municipal budget policy and procedures, monitoring that expenditures and revenues are within approved level. Develop, train and implement programs, policies and performance standards for subordinate personal within the department.
Review and evaluate changes to Federal, State and Municipal requirements that could impact project plans and analyzes the impacts and assures compliance.
Ensure the department provides staff support to the planning and zoning commission, platting board, zoning board of examiners and appeals, urban design commission, and Municipal Assembly. Direct the conduct of site selection studies of areas under consideration then reviews and prepares recommendations for zoning, conditional use, variance, subdivision and site plan reviews. Communicate on behalf of the Municipality program activities to state, federal and local agencies, as required while advising and informing the administration on department projects and activities.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering Planning, Economics, Geography, Public Administration, Business Administration or closely related discipline and ten (10) years of professional experience in economic development, public planning, or a related field.
Master's degree in Engineering Planning, Economics, Geography, Public Administration, Business Administration or closely related discipline and eight (8) years of professional experience in economic development, public planning, or a related field.
Must possess and/or obtain
- Valid State of Alaska Driver's License by the time of hire.
Applicants with professional accreditation from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) will be given preference.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Driver's License and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
