TheHSSE NANA Shareholder internship provides NANA Shareholders the opportunity forprofessional training in various offices throughout the NMS HSSE Division. Thisposition establishes and promotes the maintenance of a safe, accident free, andhealthy work environment. Interns will perform assigned duties to acquireknowledge of methods, procedures and standards required for successfulperformance. May perform duties such as gathering and organizing data toprovide information for departmental special projects or reports; basicarithmetic computations; assist in preparing written reports; accompanyprofessional level employees on assignments. Assignments serve to offerpractical experience and broad exposure to NMS’ organizational structure.Specific activities vary by assignment.

The NMS NANAShareholder College Internships available will be 40 hours per week, and willbe a six (6) to eight (8) week internship and is expected to start in June.Lodging and transportation are not provided, the intern will be expected tocover these expenses as applicable

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide basic administrative support to the HSSE department.

  • Applies research techniques and analytical methods to the study of administrative systems, organizational structures, policies and procedures.

  • Answers and makes phone calls, responds to program related questions, and sends written material as appropriate.

  • Performs such standard office duties such as producing general office written or electronic correspondence, handling of incoming phone calls, handling of the mail, operating office equipment, filing, etc.

  • Handles confidential information in a discreet, professional manner.

  • Assists others with overflow work or special projects.

  • Provide oversight and support of tasks with potential impact on the Environment.

  • Assists with consulting managers and supervisors regarding the design and use of equipment, shops, fire-prevention and safety programs. Assists managers and supervisors in developing and implementing local safety related systems and procedures.

  • Inspects or tours organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, unsafe behaviors, recommends corrective or preventative measures where indicated.

  • Conducts studies and job safety analyses of industrial accident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies.

  • Assist with developing, reviewing and revising health and safety policies, procedures, programs and handbooks

  • Generate and promote ideas to improve HSSE performance.

  • Provide assistance in planning and conducting required emergency drills.

  • Shadow Safety Specialists, Safety Managers and/or Workers Comp Manager.

  • The ability to maintain confidentiality at all times while displaying a professional disposition.

  • Ability to work utilizing professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of standard office equipment such as a copier, fax machine and phones.

  • Demonstrated ability to complete work in a timely and accurate manner.

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.


Minimum Requirements

  • Currentlyenrolled in college, vocational school or recently graduated from college. Theideal candidate is enrolled in A Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Sciencesin any of the following areas: industrial hygiene, safety engineering, and/orbusiness management OR an AA degree from a technical training school in adirectly safety field.

  • Must be atleast 18 years’ old.

  • Must be ableto provide legal documentation for your eligibility to work in the US.

  • Must bewilling to travel to remote location and work for 12 hours a day.

  • Thisposition may require travel to the Red Dog Mine or the North Slope to include overnight stay. Lodging provided when traveling to either location.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoors/Outdoors. Indoor: environmentallycontrolled; requires most or all work to be done inside. Outdoors: Frequentlyexposed to extreme weather conditions (wind and/or rain).

Noise level: Quiet when in anoffice setting, moderate to loud at times when visiting various job sites.

Office conditions: Standardoffice conditions

Description ofenvironment: Building Office Setting,slow pace of work environment and medium customer interaction. Remote campsetting.

Regularly required to sit,stand, etc.: Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers tohandle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see,taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Physical requirements: Mustoccasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Travel: Employee may travel upto 25% to Red Dog and/or other remote locations and may be required to usealternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snowmachines, boats, small airplanes and ATVs. Travel is coordinated by NMS.
