Doyon Universal GIS Intern in Anchorage, Alaska


POSITION OBJECTIVES: The GIS Intern is a temporary, full time position limited to 1,000 hours. Under the direction of the IS Director or designee, this position will work to edit, create, and populate a geodatabase using ESRI ArcGIS software. The GIS Intern is responsible for GIS surveying of Utility Systems. This position will verify the accuracy of collected data by producing maps, records or other documents. Successful applicant must be a self-starter and willing to spend most of the day conducting field work alone.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Under limited supervision, with a broad scope for independent initiative and judgment, the GIS intern will: 1. Collect GPS (global position system) data on Utility Systems utilizing industry standard field equipment to gather positional and attribute data for utility standard objects. 2. Prepare maps and data records as necessary. 3. Ability to learn to operate field computing technology, laser rangefinders, and GPS receivers. 4. Other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 1. Prolonged walking (2-3 miles per day) and standing in all types of environments. 2. Familiarity with GIS workstations and peripheral scanning and plotting equipment. 3. Working knowledge of GPS equipment highly desirable. 4. Microsoft Windows / Office applications experience. 5. Good analytical and problem solving skills. 6. Ability to work independently and accomplish assigned tasks with minimal supervision. 7. Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to work in a team environment. 8. Working knowledge of Survey GPS field equipment preferred. 9. Familiarity with basic cartography/map design principles.

ENVIRONMENT: The majority of the work is performed in a field setting in the outdoors. Incumbent must be physically capable of visiting utility and construction sites, and undeveloped areas. Additional duties require the incumbent to perform work in a traditional office setting utilizing a computer workstation. The position requires the incumbent to lift and carry items weighing less than 40 pounds.

Incumbent must be able to maintain a level of physical fitness to perform job duties. 3. Incumbent is subject to pre-hire and random drug testing in accordance with DU policy. 4. Excellent work habits. 5. Must be eligible to work on a military installation in Alaska.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 1. High School Diploma or equivalent is required. 2. Valid Alaska Driver’s License with clean driving record.
